Neighbour Swap respects your privacy. We only collect the information needed to operate the service, such as your name, contact details and local area.  The personal information you provide when joining Neighbour Swap is used to manage your membership and help arrange borrowing and lending between members. Your contact details are not displayed publicly on the website. Where necessary to arrange a swap, relevant contact details may be shared between the members involved so they can communicate directly. Neighbour Swap will not sell your personal information to third parties.

Neighbour Swap is a local network platform where people can exchange items, skills, services, or favours with others nearby.

Is Neighbour Swap free to use?

First month free, £5 membership thereafter. Free months offered for inviting active members, (see membership section above).

Why not just use a Facebook group?

Facebook groups can be a great way to connect locally, but Neighbour Swap is designed specifically for sharing, borrowing and requesting items.  Everything is organised in one place, with categories, requests and clear guidelines to help create a trusted local sharing network. Instead of posts disappearing in a busy group, Neighbour Swap is built around helping people find what they need and offer what they have. As the community grows additional features will make borrowing and lending even easier, while keeping the focus on local trust and sharing.

Are members verified?

Yes. We carry out basic checks on new members to help confirm they are genuine and live in the area they register for. However, no verification process can guarantee a person’s identity, reliability or behaviour, so members should always use their own judgment when arranging swaps.

Do I have to swap item for item?

No. Despite the name, you don’t have to swap item for item. You can simply lend, borrow, swap, offer a favour, or arrange something else that suits you. Every agreement is made privately between the people involved.

Does Neighbour Swap handle payments?

No. Any payments, deposits, or private arrangements are handled directly between users.

Are Any Items Allowed?

Does my membership include insurance?

Neighbour Swap is a platform that helps local people connect. Membership does not include insurance for items shared between members. Members decide between themselves what they are comfortable lending and borrowing, and all arrangements are made directly between them in line with our Terms & Conditions.

Can I ask for a deposit?

Yes. Members may agree a refundable deposit between themselves if they feel it is appropriate, particularly for higher-value items.

Neighbour Swap does not collect or hold deposits.

What happens if something is damaged?

We encourage all members to treat borrowed items with care and respect. Before lending, you can discuss any expectations with the other member and agree how any accidental damage would be handled.

If something does go wrong, we encourage members to communicate openly and resolve the issue fairly between themselves. Neighbour Swap is built on trust, respect and neighbourly goodwill.

Owners decide what they are comfortable lending, and borrowers agree to take reasonable care of items and return them in the same condition whenever possible.

What about normal wear and tear?

Not every fault is anyone’s fault. Older or well-used items can sometimes develop problems through normal use. If this happens, members should communicate openly and work together to reach a fair outcome.

Extra safeguards for valuable items

For higher-value items, members may wish to agree extra safeguards before lending, such as taking photos of the item’s condition, using a refundable deposit, or agreeing in writing how accidental damage will be handled.

What about electrical items?

Everyday electrical items can be shared, provided they are not prohibited under our Terms & Conditions.

Members should only offer items they reasonably believe are safe and in suitable working condition. Borrowers should also check that they are happy with the condition of an item and that it is suitable for what they intend to use it for.

Neighbour Swap does not inspect, test or certify members’ electrical items.

How do I arrange to borrow, lend or exchange something?

Simply browse available items or favours listed then complete the request form below to get in touch with the owner. To become a member, you’ll need to offer at least one item or favour to the network.

Do I have to lend something just because someone requests it?

No. You should only list items that you are genuinely happy to lend, but that does not mean you have to agree to every request.

An item may already be in use, temporarily unavailable, or you may decide you are not comfortable proceeding with a particular arrangement.

Neighbour Swap is built on active participation, so members are expected to offer items, skills or favours they are genuinely willing to share when reasonably available.

When are addresses shared?

Addresses and contact details will only be shared once both parties are happy to proceed with a swap.

Can I offer services or skills instead of items?

Yes. Users may offer skills, help, services, or favours, provided they are lawful and clearly described.

What should I do before arranging an exchange?

We recommend:

– Asking questions before agreeing
– Inspecting items before exchange where possible
– Meeting safely in suitable locations

What if something goes wrong?

Neighbour Swap only provides the platform and is not involved in agreements between users. Any disputes or issues must be resolved directly between the people involved.

Can I report suspicious behaviour or listings?

Yes. If you believe a listing or user is unsafe, misleading, fraudulent, or inappropriate, please contact us so we can review it.

What items are not allowed?

Illegal, unsafe, counterfeit, stolen, or prohibited items are not permitted on the platform please read the prohibited items section in Terms & Conditions.

Do I need to use my real name?

Yes. As part of our basic member verification, you’ll need to provide your real name and accurate address when you register. This helps us build a safer, more trusted community.

However, if Neighbour Swap allows display names in the future, your public profile may not need to show your full name. Regardless, the information you provide during registration must be truthful and up to date.

Is my information private?

Neighbour Swap does not sell your information to third parties. Personal details should only be shared when you choose to proceed with a swap.

Can Neighbour Swap guarantee swaps or users?

No. Users participate at their own discretion and risk. We cannot guarantee the accuracy of listings or the behaviour of users.
